Healthy Snacking At Night

Hey folks.

Well, I don’t know about y’all, but I have been eating way more snacks at night than I have in the past. Whether it’s the change of season soon to come or just boredom now that Summer is officially over, I have no clue, but what I do know is that I am trying to incorporate healthy snacks into my evening and nighttime snacking.

So what am I doing to ensure that I keep my healthy evening snacks in priority check? I’ll tell ya…:)

I am making sure that what I snack on is low in calories, fat and sugar. So I’ll go for some light microwave popcorn with no butter topping. Or better yet, when I am more in the mood, I will bring out the air popper and make some healthier popcorn versions with a bit of popcorn seasoning (Wabash Valley Farms Popcorn Seasonings). I like the ease of use of the Presto Hot Air Popper plus the aroma of freshly popped popcorn is wonderful and brings me back to my youth and the local movie theater.

If I’m not in a popcorn mood, I’ll snack on some pretzels, but I get the unsalted variety. I know, what’s a pretzel without salt! Don’t forget though, we are thinking of a lifestyle shift and the focus is on healthier snacking alternatives so unsalted pretzels it is…:) My fav unsalted pretzel pack is Rold Gold and even without the salt, is still yummy!

A few times a week I’ll indulge in about four squares of 70% or more Dark Chocolate. Any brand will do really, the trick though, is to let the chocolate melt in your mouth. The longer the chocolate lasts, the less you will be inclined to eat a bunch more squares. At least that’s the idea…:)

Of curse, I also go for fruit, some veggie’s and dip (usually Hummus). And one of my favorite evening health snacks is a single serving box of any cereal you have on hand. No milk, just the dry contents. This type of snack definitely beats a bag of chips!

Then there’s no sugar added Apple Sauce which I really enjoy. And two single serving containers comes out to be about 100 calories give or take the brand. I try and go for the Organic product if I can get it. If not then definitely shoot for a brand name, and don’t forget to read the nutritional info to keep the sugar grams down. Some have more than others so keep informed.

Two more points: One - drink some water with your snacks. You will feel fuller and less likely to want to binge on whatever yumminess you are snacking on. And two - try and finish all your snacking at least two to three hours before bed time. That way you have had time to digest and your body won’t be working that hard to process the snack stuff.

Oh yeah, there’s one more thing…we could all just stop snacking at night…hmmmmm…NAH!!

So there ya go. Some of my favorite healthy evening snacks. What are yours? I’d love to hear them so please feel free to comment.

Later all and happy snacking.
